Screening of the film "Manas

🗓️ Thursday, April 9, 2026, from 6 p.m.

The Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies and the Consulate General of Brazil in Marseille invite you to a screening of the film Manas.

The film will be screened in its original version with French subtitles.

Synopsis
Documentary filmmaker Marianna Brennand Fortes tells the fictional story of 13-year-old Tielle. A much-needed film about sexual and domestic violence in the heart of Amazonia, breaking an unbearable silence.

Tielle lives, or rather survives, with her parents, brothers and younger sister on the Amazon island of Marajó. In this environmentally closed world, we discover an incestuous and violent history where the father's fear and the mother's submission make rebellion difficult. Yet Tielle grows up with dreams of emancipation. But how can she build herself in a place where social relations are limited to the quest for food, and where the sexual exploitation of girls and teenagers is the norm?

Coming from a documentary background, the director immerses the viewer remarkably well in Tielle's restricted universe, inviting us to sit alongside her without ever resorting to frontal shots. Manas (Sisters, in Portuguese) is also about sisterhood and solidarity between the women of this community.(Les Grignoux)
