Calendar and organization of university life
The1st semester begins in the first week of September and ends at Christmas.The2nd semester begins in January and ends on June 30.The exact start and end dates may vary from year to year, so please arrive in Aix en Provence on September1 (if you are coming for the1st semester or the academic year) or January 2 (if you are coming for the2nd semester).
Course organization (ECTS)
Master's and bachelor's courses are organized into semesters (even and odd).
Odd-numbered semesters (S1, S3, S5) correspond to the winter term, and even-numbered semesters (S2, S4, S6) to the spring term.
Within each semester, there are UEs, or Unités d'Enseignement, or teaching units, which are made up of subjects.
Each UE has a specific code, for example HLA4UO4
The first letter (H) corresponds to our UFR
The next two letters correspond to the major (English, History, etc.)
The number (for bachelor's degrees) corresponds to the semester, and the last two digits refer to the UE number.
HLA4U04 = a DEMA course in semester 4 (L2 2nd semester/spring)
A UE is often divided into lectures (CM) and tutorials (TD).
The CM takes place like a lecture , often in an amphitheater. The TD is more like a course. TDs are used to explore theoretical issues covered in lectures, using examples, practical exercises and presentations.
Each teaching unit has a value defined in European credits (ECTS, European Credit Transfer System). These credits can be capitalized.
The ECTS system guarantees academic recognition of studies carried out abroad. As an exchange student at Aix-Marseille University, this system enables you to obtain credits during your stay at our universities and have them validated on your return.
