Reading Nights - The prisoners of Sainte-Marguerite Island

🗓️ Friday, January 23, 2026, 6:30 p.m.

The Archives nationales d'outre-mer take part in the Nuits de la lecture in partnership with Aix-Marseille Université!

Since the start of the academic year in September 2025, students in the mise en scène and dramaturgy program have been working on archival documents retracing the history of Algerian political prisoners deported to Sainte-Marguerite Island, off the coast of Cannes.

Between 1841 and 1884, at the height of the French conquest of Algeria, several thousand men, women and children were exiled without trial to the island of Sainte-Marguerite.

Come and discover their story(s) in an archive reading performance!

Using archival documents - letters, lists of names, decrees, reports - preserved at the ANOM, the students today choose to retrace the history of these Algerian exiles.
