Master Histoire - Parcours La M茅diterran茅e, L鈥橢urope et le monde

  • D茅partement Histoire
  • Formation initiale - continue
  • Aix-en-Provence Schuman
  • AIMS

Track 3 aims to train students in research by examining the history of the Mediterranean as a natural environment, historical context, and historiographical category; exploring the political experiences that took place in the Mediterranean; and taking into account the diversity of Mediterranean languages and cultures, whose productions (material and immaterial, textual and iconographic) constitute the materials for historians. A historical understanding of the Mediterranean also requires taking into account the history of the continents bordering it, including Southern Europe, and more broadly its connection to the world. Indeed, Europe has largely shaped its history in the mirror of the Mediterranean and the models it has identified there. But the Mediterranean also echoes the history of the world, through global migrations, the rise of trade networks, and as a laboratory for colonial projections.

  • TARGETED STUDENTS

Students holding a BA degree in history or another diploma with substantial coursework in history, and who wish to pursue research training in the history of European and Mediterranean societies.

  • ADMISSION CONDITIONS

Applicants with a bachelor's degree are authorised to register for a master's degree. Holders of other qualifications: https://allsh.univ-amu.fr/fr/formation/scolarite

To be interested in studying the history of Europe and the Mediterranean. To begin learning an ancient language and its paleography, or to study the paleography of modern languages

  • STRUCTURE AND ORGANISATION

Students in Track 3 prepare a research thesis in both M1 and M2 on a specialized topic in the history of Europe and/or the Mediterranean, under the supervision of a faculty member from the History Department. They also take the courses of the History Master's program in parallel.

These courses are organized into three knowledge and skills units (BCC). BCC1, which is common to all tracks, aims to provide a foundational understanding in foreign languages and thesis methodology. BCC1 also includes attending to a research seminar related to the thesis topic. The seminar is primarily chosen from the seminars of the following research laboratories hosted by the MMSH : CCJ, IRA, LA3M, TDMAM, TELEMMe. BCC2 includes courses by historical period, shared by students in all three thematic tracks. BCC3 includes specialized transchronological courses related to the track's theme.

The specialized courses of BCC3 are:

    • Semester 1: a research workshop during the pre-entry week to facilitate the integration of the cohort; a Historiography course on the history of the Mediterranean and of Mediterranean studies; Specialization Course 1.
    • Semester 2: Specialization Course 2.
    • Semester 3: Specialization Course 3 and the research workshop for M2 thesis supervision.

Semester 2 is dedicated to attending courses and writing the M1 research thesis. Semester 4 is devoted to an internship or international research mobility, as well as writing the M2 research thesis.

  • LEARNING AND RESEARCH

The MA degree in History trains students in research through research, drawing on the fields and research work of the faculty members in the Department of History specialised in the history of France, Europe and the Mediterranean.

  • KNOWLEDGE TO BE ACQUIRED

Track 3 is open to students who wish to specialize in the history of Europea and the Mediterranean, regardless of their specific historical period of interest. As a common natural environment for very diverse societies since Antiquity, the Mediterranean is not an immutable framework: the climate and environment in which these societies evolved have changed, while human activity has altered the natural environment and transformed the landscapes. But the Mediterranean is not only a unique natural environment where original forms of social life, starting with the city, have flourished. It is also the backdrop for a shared history among the plural societies that have settled along its shores: a history made of conflicts and exchanges, imperial conquests and resistances, political or religious unity projects and dissidence, the constrained or free mobility of men and women, the circulation of ideas and beliefs.
