    The ‘Visual Arts and Art Science course - known as the ‘APSA Master' - is one of the four courses that make up the Arts Master's programme at Aix-Marseille University. This course is based on the creative, research and professional issues associated with the field of contemporary art, bringing together the practice of visual arts, the critical reflection that these inspire and the practices that define the conditions for their visibility. The acquisition of artistic and theoretical skills is aimed at professional integration into the creative professions, whether this involves professional artistic practice or the pursuit of doctoral studies, as well as registration for the Agrégation Arts option in visual arts. The APSA Master's degree also opens the door to careers in art criticism, specialised journalism and the cultural sector, particularly in cultural institutions (museums, DRACs, art centers, etc.), public and private organisations.

  • ADMISSION CONDITIONS

  • STRUCTURE AND ORGANISATION

    The two years of the APSA Masters are divided into two semesters each.

    The courses are made up of cross-disciplinary general skills courses shared with all of the other type courses in the Arts Master :

    1)       Arts theory in English or Spanish ;

    2)       conduct research according to a scientific procedure ;

    3)       research seminars in the laboratory (LESA) ;

    of workshop practice courses :

    1)      personal practice ;

    2)      collective project ;

    3)      exhibition practice' ;

    4)      technical workshops.

    5)       issues of contemporary'art and its exhibition ;

    6)      history and critical issues of'contemporary art ;

    7)      history and critical theses ;

    Students·e·s do an end-of-year exhibition in M1 and an end-of-study exhibition in M2, écrite;a prémoire;-mémoire en M1 et, en M2, soutiennent un mémoire devant jury présent&e; devant un accrochage substantiel de travaux artistiques.

    Finally, students attend various workshops and other meetings with guest artists. M2 students complete a compulsory work placement in the second semester

  • LEARNING AND RESEARCH

    The Visual Arts and Art Science course stream of Aix-Marseille University's Master of Arts is attached to LESA (Laboratoire de recherche en sciences des arts). The laboratory organises the department's research activities, in particular through a programme of seminars and conferences which Master's students are required to attend regularly. It also helps to organise research exhibitions and thesis exhibitions, most of which take place at Turbulence. Lastly, the LESA journal Turbulences provides a space for the publication of texts and the dissemination of the work of Masters and PhD students.

    The knowledge and skills acquired at the end of the APSA Master's degree enable students to offer a wide range of professional services, including the creation and realisation of personal artistic projects, the design and management of artistic projects and the development of new media.the knowledge and skills acquired at the end of the APSA Master's enable students to offer a range of professional services, from the creation and production of personal artistic projects to the design and management of cultural projects in the field of contemporary art. The training is based on: a) The development and deepening of a singular artistic production, informed by the issues at stake in contemporary art. This may involve one or more fields and media: mology, art history, etc  c) In-depth knowledge of the works and phases of the arts, the theoretical contributions to the study of contemporary art, and the importance of contemporary art as a source of inspiration;oric contributions nourishing experimentation, and contributing to the formation of a way of thinking that is attentive to developments in real art.

  • PROFESSIONAL SKILLS TO BE ACQUIRED

    The knowledge and skills acquired at the end of the APSA Master's degree enable students to fulfil a range of professional requirements, from the creation and realisation of personal artistic projects to the design and management of cultural projects rooted in the field of contemporary art. The training is based on: a) The development and deepening of a singular artistic production, informed by the issues at stake in contemporary art. This may involve one or more fields and media: mology, art history, etc  c) In-depth knowledge of the works and phases of art, the thematic contributions to the study of contemporary art, and a knowledge of the history of art;c) In-depth knowledge of the works and phases of the arts, with theoretical contributions feeding into experimentation and contributing to the development of a way of thinking that is attentive to the developments of contemporary art

  • INTERNSHIPS AND SUPERVISED PROJECTS

    M2 students are required to complete an internship (5 credits) and write an internship dissertation in the second semester, when they have very few courses left. The length of the placement is not fixed because, depending on the nature of the placement, it may be spread over a long period or, on the contrary, be concentrated on a few days. 2 courses are offered and supervised by the LESA laboratory

  • SPECIFIC TEACHING CONDITIONS

    The APSA Master's degree is based on thematic subject teaching and practical workshop courses. Students have access to dedicated spaces and equipment, including workshops, a photo laboratory, an exhibition gallery and fully equipped offices. They work in these spaces outside of class hours. They also have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of workshops with guest artists

  • OFFSITE TEACHING

    Most of the courses take place at Turbulence (Bât. 14) in Marseille, but some courses can be held in the spaces of the Master's partner structures: FRAC, MUCEM, MAC, Friche Belle de Mai, galleries and associative structures, artists' studios, etc.

    The APSA Master's degree leads to the creative professions (artist), art criticism, cultural professions within, in particular, cultural institutions (musées, DRAC, centres d'art...) and public and private structures (galleries, artists'sidences, documentation and distribution centres...).

    It also enables students to pursue doctoral studies (specialising in « Visual Arts », « Art Sciences » or « Pratique et théorie de la création artistique et littéraire ») as well as registration for the Agré Arts option arts plastiques competitive entrance exam.
