Abstract

This discussion aims to examine the role of education as a lever for the prevention of genocide and mass violence.
Drawing on the interdisciplinary perspectives of UNESCO professors and chairholders from a wide range of fields - philosophy, history, law, political science, social psychology, archaeology, English literature, sociology, etc. - the session will explore how these issues can be addressed. -The session will explore how these disciplines can be brought together to contribute to a shared reflection on prevention.
In particular, recourse to history and the critical distance offered by the human and social sciences can help shed light on the recurring mechanisms of hatred and dehumanization, alert us to current risks and offer lessons for the future. How can the transmission of knowledge, citizenship education and the promotion of the universal values of human rights contribute to building societies that are more vigilant and resilient in the face of the risks of dysfunction?
Beyond theoretical reflection, the discussion will also focus on understanding other dimensions of this academic commitment.

How do these researchers interact, whenever possible, with political decision-makers, civil society players, magistrates, armed forces and law enforcement agencies? What projects, collaborations or initiatives emerge from these exchanges between the academic world and the institutions responsible for prevention?
The aim of this meeting is to highlight the transformative potential of education, not only as a tool of knowledge, but also as an instrument of collective vigilance. The reflections and exchanges of participating researchers during two days of discussions on education for citizenship and prevention - organized in a place of memory.
