Presentation
TübAix, created in 1990, is part of theFranco-German University and follows on from the twinning between the cities and universities of Aix-Marseille and Tübingen, which dates back to 1960, as well as the tradition of numerous exchanges between students, teachers and researchers from the two cities.
The program is supported by the cities of Aix-en-Provence and Tübingen.
The aim is to obtain double degrees (Licence / Bachelor of Arts and Master / Master of Arts) in History. Students from Aix and Tübingen taking part in the program spend half their studies at the partner university (one year in the Bachelor's program and/or one year in the Master's program). In line with the Sorbonne - Bologna process, since the start of the 2007-08 academic year, the TübAix program offers two entry levels: Bachelor's degree (bac + 1) and Master's degree (Bachelor's degree in History, good knowledge of German).
The courses and examinations taken at both universities are automatically recognized by the partner university. In this way, Franco-German classes are formed, ensuring the homogeneity of studies and diplomas.
The integrated curriculum is designed to compensate for the differences between the two education systems, and to combine their respective advantages. The French system, which relies on a diversification of knowledge covering the four historical periods and on formal methods of reflection, is complemented by the German curriculum, which encourages more personal initiative.
The acquisition of a double degree, the perfecting of a second language, the capacity for greater commitment and mobility, and the knowledge of both university systems open up wider professional prospects for students. Career opportunities, which are comparable in both systems, include research, journalism, communications, European institutions, cultural relations and, in France, secondary education, particularly in Franco-German and European studies.

Program
TübAix students follow the same courses as other history students in Tübingen and Aix-en-Provence. For further information, please visit the websites of the Aix-en-Provence History Department and the Tübingen History Department.
TübAix students choose one major and one minor as part of the joint Bachelor of Arts/Licence program. The final written and oral examinations cover both subjects.
The major subject must be History.
The minor may be chosen freely, in accordance with the regulations in force at the University of Tübingen. We recommend choosing one of the following subjects:
- Archäologie / Archaeology
- Kunstgeschichte / Art History
- Geographie / Geography (especially recommended for candidates planning to take the French competitive examination for teachers after the Master's degree).
The TübAix Master's program is divided equally between the University of Tübingen and the University of Aix-Marseille. Two semesters are spent in Tübingen and two in Aix - in any order students choose. Each year, Franco-German classes of students study together and take the same diplomas. After passing the exams for the four semesters of study, students receive a Master's degree from the University of Aix-Marseille and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Tübingen.
The curriculum of the program is based, for the French part, on the Master d'Histoire - Sciences humaines et sociales / Mention "Histoire et humanités" of the University of Aix-Marseille; and for the German part, on the regulations ("Studien- und Prüfungsordnungen") of the University of Tübingen concerning History studies for the Master of Arts degree.
The program offers students a wide range of complementary courses. Complementary courses include
- The types of courses offered. At Tübingen, courses are mainly disciplinary: students are expected to strengthen their historical knowledge and skills. At Aix, they are also expected to take part in methodology courses and research seminars, and may follow professionalization modules.
- Auxiliary disciplines. At Tübingen, students can opt for non-disciplinary modules (Nachbarbereich). At Aix, they are encouraged to study ancient or modern languages.
- Historical periods studied. At Aix, students take history courses relating to their period of specialization (Antiquity, the Middle Ages, Modern Times or the Contemporary Era). At Tübingen, they must also choose courses covering other periods.
- Cultural areas studied. At Aix, students can write their dissertation on the history of France or the South (Mediterranean, Africa). In Tübingen, they can do their dissertation on German or Eastern European history. Theses on European and comparative history can be supervised at both establishments.
Theses are marked as follows. In the first year of the Master's program, no bi-national co-supervision is allowed: three German mini-dissertations are automatically recognized as equivalent to one French dissertation, and vice versa. In the second year of the Master's program, bi-national co-direction is compulsory: the extensive version of the dissertation is presented in the language of the host university, together with a 15-20 page summary in the language of the partner country.
Since 2012, TübAix research students have been able to continue their training as historians at doctoral level within the framework of the Aix-Tübingen Doctoral College "Conflicts of Cultures / Cultures of Conflict" (co-tutelles de thèse).

Mobility assistance
The Franco-German University (UFA) pays students a mobility allowance for periods spent in Germany. This allowance can be cumulated with any study grant awarded on social criteria, as well as with the Erasmus study mobility grant.
Since September 2023, the amount of the allowance has been €350 per month, for a stay of between 6 and 12 months. Payment is capped at ten months per academic year. However, at the request of the program manager, an additional two months may be granted for a compulsory summer internship.
The annual reference amount is currently €3,500 per academic year (subject to revision at the start of each academic year).
In the event of interruption of the course, reimbursement of the sums paid may be required.
The Franco-German University is a network of French and German higher education establishments. Its administrative headquarters are in Saarbrücken. In partnership with more than 170 French and German institutions, the UFA runs bi-national training courses, doctoral schools and research projects.
TübAix students can stay in a university residence during their stay in the partner country.
An intensive German language course is offered to French students arriving in Tübingen before starting their first semester in Germany.
At both universities, TübAix students benefit from special support and administrative services; in addition to the teachers and secretaries of the history departments, they have a bilingual administrative manager at each establishment.
