Distance learning in Arts, Letters, Languages and Humanities

The Service de la Formation à Distance (SFAD) is responsible for organizing distance learning courses in Arts, Letters, Languages and Humanities at Aix-Marseille University (amU).

A higher diploma (Bachelor's or Master's) obtained by distance learning has the same institutional recognition as that obtained in the classroom.

At SFAD, over 1,000 students take distance-learning university courses each year (Licences 1, 2, 3, Masters 1, 2).

NOTA BENE: SFAD courses are not free of charge (360 euros for a full year of undergraduate studies), in addition to university registration fees.
Examinations are held in Aix en Provence at the end of each semester.

Distance learning is possible!

Who can benefit from distance learning?

  • students living far from a university site or abroad,
  • students enrolled in Campus connecté,
  • people with disabilities,
  • employees, job-seekers (contact Continuing Education),
  • persons deprived of their liberty,
  • students in double courses,
  • any other person who prefers or has to choose distance learning.

DISTANCE LEARNING IN CONTINUING EDUCATION

Continuing education trainees can take certain courses by distance learning.

Registration procedures are as follows:

  • Continuing education financed by a training organization or a company: the costs of the Distance Learning Service (DLS) are included in the financing.
  • Self-funded continuing education: the fee for registration with the distance learning service is 360 euros for the year, in addition to the cost of the course, and is payable by the trainee even if part of the course fee is waived.

Come and find out about your rights at the Continuing Education Department.

The courses offered, divided into credit units (ECTS *), are designed to prepare students for the university exams corresponding to a national diploma.

* Please note! University diplomas are not national diplomas, and are not quantified in ECTS!

Please check with your department to find out the conditions of access to these levels.

General terms and conditions

To fully understand distance learning at SFAD, please take the time to read the following information:

  • Calendar

The SFAD calendar follows the university calendar. The academic year begins in September and is divided into 2 semesters, with weeks of classes, vacations, revision and 2 weeks of exams at the end of each semester. An exam session 2 is held at the end of the year.

    UNIVERSITY CALENDAR

The most important information for distance-learning students is the examination dates, as distance-learning students sit the same exams as face-to-face students, with a few exceptions.
NB. These exam dates only concern exams organized by the school. Some exams are organized by teachers, and may take place at a different time.

  • Reviews

SFAD does not organize examinations; the school board is in charge of them: Bureau des examens.

Examinations take place at the University of Aix-Marseille sites, in Aix-en-Provence, at the same time as face-to-face students, who sit either the same or a different subject.

For each UE, you must check the knowledge control procedures proposed by the teacher.

Examination invitations : SFAD does not send out exam invitations. It is your responsibility to consult the exam calendar published by the school.

DELOCALIZED EXAMS: The application period for examinations at delocalized sites is now closed for the January session.

You can submit your application for the first session of the even-numbered semester and, if applicable, for the second session. This service is reserved for SFAD students residing in the French overseas departments and territories (DROM-COM), and for SFAD students with disabilities enrolled at a campus in mainland France.

The application period for the second wave is open from February 2 to March 30, 2026. Please send your application to allsh-examen-delocalise@univ-amu.fr

    Rules of progression

Each semester comprises a number of different subjects, known as Teaching Units (TUs). Each UE is allocated a certain number of credits, 6 or 3; a semester may therefore comprise, for example, 5 UEs with 6 credits, or 4 UEs with 6 credits plus 2 UEs with 3 credits, and so on. UEs can be compulsory for a course, or optional (choice from a list), or free (discovery UE chosen from the offer).

To acquire the credits for a UE, you need to obtain an average of at least 10/20 for this UE; it's all or nothing. An acquired UE is definitive (and cannot be retaken).

A semester is validated if all the UEs in the semester are acquired; otherwise, it is also validated by offsetting the averages of the UEs in the semester, with the weight in credits as the coefficient. A semester validated by the semester jury is definitively acquired, providing 30 credits (it is then no longer possible to retake the semester's UEs).

The new bachelor's degree decree also makes it possible to compensate at year level. Under the new bachelor's degree, the student is awarded the year if the overall average of the 2 semesters making up the year is greater than or equal to 10.
There are two examination sessions for each semester. UEs not acquired or not validated by compensation at the first session must be retaken at the second session, known as the catch-up session; for these UEs, the marks from the first session are not retained.
The methods used to assess knowledge and skills (M3C) are varied, and are chosen by the managers of each UE: written exams, continuous assessment, oral exams, graded projects, dissertation or internship report, etc. At the beginning of each year, they are published in the course catalogue. They are published at the beginning of each year on the faculty website.
Students are allowed to repeat a maximum of five administrative registrations for all three years of the bachelor's degree (see student guide). When repeating a year, a student may register for certain UEs in the following year, if the jury deems it useful for the student.

Your individual exam timetable will be available on your digital working environment(ENT), under the heading schooling>student file>exam timetable at least 15 days before your exams. This will enable you to request the necessary leave from your employer, as well as book your transport and accommodation tickets.

    Results

Results are published once the exam juries have been completed (juries are held consecutively over a period of 10 to 15 days after the exams).

Log on to your ENT (Click on the "Student file" tab, then on the "Grades and results" section).

  • The educational platform

SFAD offers its courses in digital format.

IMPORTANT REMINDER: Access to your courses will only be available once your administrative "IA" and pedagogical "IP" registrations have been fully completed (this implies that you have provided all documents and any requests for exemption, and that you have paid the corresponding fees - IA and IP fees.

Using the AMéTICE digital teaching platform

On your Environnement Numérique De Travail (ENT), you'll find two essential tools for following your distance learning courses:

    • Your amU mailbox, which gives you access to your Aix-Marseille Université e-mail account
    • AMETICE, the teaching platform where you can find your online courses.

Log on to your ENT (Espace Numérique de Travail) using your login and password.

    Procédure amétice

If you have already registered with amU: you will not receive an e-mail with your login details. You must use the login details for the digital working environment (ENT) that were sent to you when you previously registered with amU.
Access the AMeTICE platform for your online courses by clicking on the "AMeTICE" icon as shown in the example above.

You will then be registered on the AMeTICE digital platform, which will give you access to your online courses and, depending on the teachers' choice, allow you to benefit from interactive teaching (forum, for example).

You need to be registered with the university to access AMéTICE, as you'll need a username and password corresponding to those used to connect to the ENT (Espace Numérique de Travail).

When you log on to AMéTICE in this way, the UEs for which you have registered via SFAD will appear on the home page, preceded by "SFAD".

There are several ways to find your course! Click on the "My courses" menu or the "Dashboard" menu, then search by entering the course code. You can then bookmark them for your convenience.

    Warning:

    1. you must check that you have completed all the courses for which you have registered and which are listed on your course sheet.
    2. your access to the platform will be deactivated at the end of the second exam session.

  • Teaching organization

Depending on the specific nature of each discipline, teachers can offer you one or more of the following teaching activities:

    • Lectures : specially designed for SFAD and adapted to distance learning.
    • Assignments : several assignments may be offered during the semester. They provide specific practice for the exam. Check whether the teacher wishes to communicate by post or e-mail. Don't forget to enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope so that your assignment can be returned to you corrected, and to note the teaching unit (UE) code and the teacher's name. Teachers may also authorize you to post your work directly on the AMéTICE teaching platform.
    • Exercises : In some cases, you may be offered additional exercises. Unless otherwise indicated by your teacher, you should not send them back, and they will not be corrected. However, we do recommend that you complete these exercises. You will receive a standard answer sheet before the end of the semester.
    • Forum : the forum, a tool of the distance learning platform, enables you to ask your teacher questions and exchange ideas with other students enrolled in the same course.
    • Group sessions : some teaching units are grouped together on Saturdays. A monthly schedule of these sessions will be sent to each student concerned at the end of each month, for the following month. Attendance is not compulsory, but is strongly recommended.
    • Videoconferencing : In some cases, group meetings can be replaced by videoconferencing. Where appropriate, you will receive instructions on how to access a virtual classroom.

Here's a guide to distance learning: 5 things you need to know to stay motivated and effective.

Self-training

Perfecting your French

SFAD students are encouraged to pay particular attention to the quality of their French writing and expression. This quality is gradually built up through assiduous writing practice (note-taking, reading notes, etc.).

Self-study in French is also recommended. Students can take advantage of a number of online resources:

We invite you to take a look at the " Parcoursup" and " Mon Master" calendars for the 2025 campaigns:

https://www.parcoursup.gouv.fr

https://monmaster.gouv.fr

To use your previous qualifications to obtain an exemption, you must submit a file on theeCandidat application.

Please note Registration for the SFAD (DIL) will begin in September 2025, so you must first complete your administrative registration with the School Office.

Registration at SFAD is a 4-step process, depending on your profile. Repeat students do not need to apply for admission, and must go directly to the administrative registration process.

  • Step 1

You must follow the Parcoursup procedure to apply for Licence 1 and the eCandidat procedure for the following levels

How to find our distance learning courses on parcoursup
  • Step 2

Administrative registrations at the university are made via the Registrar's Office.

  • Step 3

Once this administrative registration as a distance student has been finalized with the schooling department, you must register and proceed with payment for SFAD courses from September 1ᵉʳ 2025 via our DIL application.

Please note : DIL registration and payment are a two-step process:

    1. You submit a registration request which must be validated by the service (processing time up to 5 working days);
    2. you will be asked to pay by credit card (via a message to your university e-mail address) once your registration request has been validated.

Only then will the "payment" function be activated in your account.

  • Step 4

Once you have made your payment in the DIL application, you will receive an e-mail in your student mailbox.

You will then be able to complete your pedagogical registration (without pedagogical registration, you will not be able to sit exams) by connecting to the IPWeb application, by clicking on the "Inscription Pédagogique" icon on your ENT or by clicking on the link :

    IPWeb application

SFAD & DISABILITY

The University is, by its very nature, an open, universal institution that enshrines equal rights and opportunities. As a public institution, its mission is to promote integration and success for all. In line with these values, it is vital that we take on board the issue of disability. Aix-Marseille University is deeply attached to this issue, and is committed to promoting disability. Aix-Marseille Université's disability mission welcomes and supports students with physical, sensory or psychological disabilities, dyslexia or long-term disabling health conditions. It offers measures tailored to the needs of each student.
